The Lilac Festival Takes Over Mackinac
It’s almost summer time on Mackinac Island and that means it’s almost time for the first and largest summer event on the island, the 68th Annual Lilac Festival! Running from June 3rd to the 12th, this event attracts thousands of visitors and isn’t just about the island’s historic variety of lilacs, but a celebration of Mackinac history and culture. Visitors can expect a whole host of events over the course of the ten days, including the coronation of the Lilac King and Queen, a Lilac Festival 10k, Grand Hotel History Lecture, sailing tours of the harbor, walking tours with experts in everything from Mackinac history to wild lilacs, wine and food tastings, sunset boat cruises, face-painting and magic shows for the kids, horse-drawn carriage tours and so much more! The major tent pole events will include the Taste of Mackinac Culinary Event, which gives visitors the opportunity to sample culinary favorites from local chefs at the island’s restaurants, ranging from French, Irish and Italian to Jamaican, Mexican and New American. It will also feature the Mackinac Island Dog and Pony Show, celebrating our equine and canine companions, ending in a special parade where the dogs and horses are all dressed up in a zany celebration, and finally, the signature event of the entire festival, the Lilac Festival Grand Parade. We still haven’t covered all the events that have been packed into the festival, so you’ll just have to go and find out for yourself! When you’ve experienced everything this amazing festival has to offer, you can relax and refresh yourself at the Hotel Iroquois.
